Google Maps was previously called Google Local Search, which more accurately describes the functionality of Google Maps. Google Maps has a list of all established businesses. Apparently, it shows the location of the business on the map and provides driving directions. But it also provides huge publicity opportunities.
Business owners can include photos and videos in their map list. Being able to include 10 photos and 5 videos makes Google Maps a listing for the business owner and provides valuable information to potential customers.
An image can be extremely helpful in displaying important information to a potential customer. If someone was looking for a nursery, think of how valuable it would be to have photographs of the facility both inside and outside. This is almost better than a full-page ad in yellow pages, except that the Google Maps listing is free. Compare that to a full-page advertisement in other media.
Google also offers the business owner the opportunity to post 5 videos. This is almost like getting a free TV commercial, except that the information is targeted to potential customers who are already interested in the business owner's products or services. With today's cheap video devices, a business owner can record their own business videos and post to their Google Maps listing via YouTube.
With a rapidly shrinking advertising budget, businesses should make the most of this Google opportunity. The only caveat is that for business listings to be fully effective, business listings must be on the first page of Google search results. Fortunately, customizing Google Maps listings are fairly easy.
